About the sources

Where the books come from, how they were cut into masa’il, how the commentaries are tied to them, and how the map is ordered.

The books

The app holds 54 books and 630,394 masa’il. Each book comes from al-Maktaba al-Shamila in its edition, cut into masa’il: one ruling a row, in the book’s words, with its page in the edition.

The commentaries

A commentary is tied to its text by the text’s words it prints in brackets, so its words show under the mas’ala they explain. The masa’il a commentary adds are numbered through it. The table gives how much of each text’s words were found in its commentary.

The map

Each chapter of the books is placed in a topic of fiqh by its own name in its book; one whose name says nothing stays with the chapter before it. The map holds 629,640 of 630,394 masa’il; the rest are the books’ prefaces, indexes and chapters that do not name their subject.

The topics in each field follow their order in the four base texts, al-Quduri, Khalil, al-Minhaj and Zad al-Mustaqni’, and no single school’s book is the frame. When you choose your school, they follow its text.

Comparing

In each topic every school’s text from its own books is shown under its own chapter names, side by side, with each mas’ala’s commentaries under it; then what the ten books of comparative fiqh say on that topic, in their words with their pages. We match no ruling to another: the reader sees each school’s text and compares.

The schools’ words on the session option are quoted from their books with their pages on Shamela; the verse is from the Tanzil text, unmodified; the hadith from their collections with their numbers. We write no answer of our own: a short answer is the base text’s own words.

The ayat in the texts

An ayah a mas’ala or a commentary quotes in its words is marked in the Qur’an’s colour and opens its page in the Qur’an app. 38,530 quoted ayat were found in the app’s texts.

My school

When you choose your school it comes first in comparing, on the map and in the school’s path; no text changes. The choice stays on your device only.

Not a fatwa

What is here shows what the schools’ books say; it is not a fatwa on any case. No school is ranked above another.
